The Storyteller

I've always loved reading, but in the past few years I've found myself too busy to do much reading for pleasure, what with all the schoolwork and exams we have at this age! However, I've been on my Easter break for the past two weeks and spent quite a bit of time lazing around the beach and the house, which has created the perfect relaxed atmosphere to do some reading for pleasure again! To start off with, I chose to read a book called The Storyteller, by Jodi Picoult. Both my mum and one of my friends recommended this book to me, and now I want to recommend it to you.

The book follows a split narrative and covers the stories of multiple different people. The main two character narratives are a young woman living in modern day America and her grandmother who was a victim of the Holocaust. Obviously, this is pretty heavy subject matter so if you're only looking for a bit of light reading then maybe this isn't the one for you - parts of the book are very upsetting, as you can imagine, but I've always been quite fascinated by the Second World War and the Holocaust, ever since reading Anne Frank's diary when I was younger, so I found this very interesting, despite the unsettling subject matter.

I already knew that Jodi Picoult is a beautiful writer, having fallen in love with her style after reading My Sister's Keeper, but what I didn't realise is that she is obviously also a fantastic researcher. Her storyline and facts seemed so real and accurate, which could only have been achieved from extremely thorough research into the time period. Not only did I enjoy reading the story, but I enjoyed learning things about the war that I didn't know before. As a past history student, that's definitely a good thing!

I always think that the true measure of a great book is the inability to put it down, and I definitely felt that with this. Each chapter leaves you aching to read more, and the twist at the end is definitely a shocker worth waiting for. And, the great news about this book is that, if you really love it, Jodi has loads more waiting for you!

I would highly recommend reading this if you're looking for a new book, especially if you're interested in history and enjoy thinking about moral issues! It's a total page-turner.

Let me know if you've read this book and what you thought of it, or if you have any reading recommendations for me!
