Plantbased Exmouth

11:30 am

When my mum came to visit me at university back in February, I couldn't resist taking her on a little trip to the coast to visit our nearest seaside town, Exmouth - which I've previously written about in this blog post. Exmouth is a gorgeous little town and is absolutely perfect for an afternoon visit to get a bit of a break from the bubble of Exeter and uni life.

Every other time I've been down to Exmouth for the afternoon, I've always ended up getting a traditionally English fish and chips to eat on the beach. This time, however, my mum and I had actually had fish and chips with my brother the day before so decided to venture away from the seafront in search of something different. What we stumbled across, after just a few minutes' walk, was a charming, quirky little vegan cafe called Plantbased Exmouth.

In case the name didn't give it away already, the cafe only sells plant-based foods, all of which are made on-site by the cafe's owners. The owner, Ash, was really lovely and helpful, chatting away to us about his vegan lifestyle and the range of foods they offered.

I deliberated over the menu for a long time, which really does justice to the range of meals they offer. There's everything from soups, chilli, pizza, salad, fake meat and sandwiches, and it was really lovely to have so much to choose from - a luxury I don't often have as a pescetarian. I eventually went for the hummus, pesto and avocado toasted sandwich, which was served on a seeded bread with cucumber, tomato and shredded carrots, which was absolutely amazing, and really inspired me to start making similar sandwiches at home! The combination of the three main ingredients made for a great flavour, a far cry from the 'bland' accusations that vegan foods often receive.

I also chose as a sunshine juice which, among other fruity ingredients, was made with blended carrots and was very refreshing, while my mum chose the curried carrot soup, which was a special that day. She's gluten-free, which means she wasn't able to have the bread roll that also comes with the soup, but we found some great corn cakes (a healthier alternative to rice cakes, I believe) which I think were probably even better than bread! My mum left the rest of the packet for me to finish off after she left, and I've loved snacking on them instead of the usual chocolate and crisps!

As well as being a cafe, the shop also has a retail side to it, stocking an enormous range of vegan products that I imagine are quite difficult to find elsewhere - I certainly haven't seen any of these in Sainsbury's! There were convenience foods like biscuits, sweets and crisps, pies and fake meats, as well as a range of body care products and vegan-friendly household products too.

The interior of the shop, meanwhile, was so endearing, with comfy sofas and cushions, vegan magazines on the tables and even lovely green bunting (anyone who knows me will know that I'm an absolute sucker for bunting!). Despite how great the food was, I did worry that they may not get much business since Exmouth is such a small town, but while my mum and I were there the cafe quickly filled up with both new and returning customers. Their prominent location on the high street is hugely beneficial, but I hasten to take any credit away from the sheer loveliness of the cafe!

With friendly staff, a fab menu, a wonderful range of retail products and the cutest interior, I can't think of a single reason why I wouldn't go back to Plantbased the next time I find myself in Exmouth. I'd definitely love to take my vegetarian housemate! If you live in Exmouth, Exeter, the Devon area, or just so happen to be passing through, I can't recommend this place enough.

Plantbased Exmouth is open 10.30am-5.30pm Monday-Wednesday, 10.30am-3pm Thursday-Friday, 10am-4pm Saturday and is closed on Sundays.
